ePublishing Solutions for Libraries

Transform Legacy Content to Searchable and Fully-Tagged XML Files.

Library Digitization Solutions

SunTec Digital helps libraries, archives and museums preserve their valuable collections, save storage space and deliver efficient services by employing centralized databases, mobile apps, and online services to offer easy accessibility to their subscribers and target audiences.

Being ePublishing solutions provider for Libraries, SunTec Digital deftly converts records, collections, and repositories in a prescribed format for easy access across different platforms, making books available to all authorized users simultaneously, as opposed to physical copies with single-reader access. We have extensive experience working on archival projects that include making use of special handling techniques for scanning and digitizing rare, fragile documents.

SunTec Digital can also help libraries with Access-control protections by implementing DRM solutions – to safeguard books from getting mishandled, lost, stolen, misplaced, misfiled, or deliberately copied and shared with unauthorized individuals, as in the case of print books.

We work closely with the clients to understand their precise requirements, employ the correct methodology and produce easily accessible, accurate electronic files that better serve the individual community and institutional world at large. We hold experience of working with NLM, HighWire Press, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress, among others.

Transitioning Legacy Content to TEI P5 Guidelines: Case in Point

Project Details

The client wanted to digitize the scarce and antiquarian collection of the modern and medieval history of the British Isles and convert it into TEI XML format conforming to TEI P5 Standard to facilitate re-using and re-purposing of content. The project entailed the digitization of 300 Calendars of State Papers in a year’s time, with every calendar divided into series. There were several volumes of titles in each series, and each title contained approximately 680 pages, overall making the project quite voluminous.

Client

Institute of Historical Research, University of London, UK

Solutions Offered

  • Due to inconsistent layouts, fonts, and typefaces, OCR tools were ineffective on these legacy documents. Therefore, we employed the double keying method to attain a high level of accuracy.
  • We pioneered an XML workflow, besides meticulously implementing the client specified DTD to ensure that the individual typography of each book was handled correctly.
  • We delivered the XML output as per the Text Encoding Initiative’s (TEI) P5 standards for multi-channel publishing. Besides being printed, the content could now be fully searchable and made available online or on mobile devices.
  • As per the client’s request, we delivered the output files in the greyscale/bitmap formats after having scanned them at 400 DPI.
